Day 03 – Nafplion to Monemvasia

After breakfast you start driving south on the East coast of Peloponnese towards Mystras and Sparta. Fought over for centuries by Franks, Venetians, Byzantines and Ottomans. Capital of the Despotate of the Morea, in the heart of the Peloponnese – a final outpost of the defeated Byzantine emperors. A bridge from antiquity to the Renaissance. Triumphant victories and humiliating defeats, but also the wisdom of philosophers and artists of Ancient Greece. The restored buildings within the castle of Mystra invite you to relive their history. Nearby, modern Sparta links yesterday with today. The ruins of the militarist state that gave birth to so many legends of fearless courage, laconic speech and true grit are just a stone’s throw away. Live history!

Continue to Monemvasia.

Monemvasia means “one entrance” and in fact the only access to this castle is via a causeway. This uniquely preserved mediaeval town is carved into the majestic grey rock like a sculpture. The “Gibraltar of the East” or a “stone ship” about to set sail, as the famous Greek poet Yannis Ritsos described his birthplace, is calling you for immediate boarding for a journey through time.

Day 04 – Monemvasia

Today can be a relax day in Monemvasia.

Or if you feel that you want to do something more, we do recommend a visit to Elafonisos

Welcome to one of the most beautiful Greek islands! In the southern Peloponnese, there is a place plucked from a dream: Elafonisos, an exotic island of just 19 sq. km, like one long sliver of paradise. Once here, you can forget all about modern civilization. The only thing you’ll need is a sarong, a sun hat and sunscreen, because life here - day and night - happens on the beach; on the pure white sand, in  the translucent turquoise water, in the shade of the cedars and  under the clear blue sky and the bright sun. Your imagination dances delightedly along the infinite horizon and like just about everyone that comes here for a beach holiday, you will want to stay forever… a castaway on Elafonisos.

Day 05 – Monemvasia – Diros Caves – Gerolimenas

Drive east towards Gythion – Areopoli to Diros Caves

Located at the top of the Mani between the town of Pyrgos Dirou and Areopolis the entrance is a few meters above the sea and a beautiful stone beach. When you arrive at the Caves you buy your 15-euro ticket at the booth and continue driving to the parking lot just outside the entrance. Try to get here early especially in the summer. In the off season you should also come early because it closes early. When you enter the cave, you will walk down a stairway to an underground lake where there are boats waiting. You are given a life-vest and then each boat gets a guide who uses poles to journey through the caverns and tunnels, which are eerily lit and adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, many with interesting names. You will pass through some sections just wide enough to allow your boat, where you have to duck your head and then enter into an enormous subterranean room where you can hear the voices of people on other boats in the distance. The air is a comfortable seventy degrees at any time of the year (so bring a sweater or light jacket if you tend to get cold).

After the visit continue to Gerolimenas (Greek: Γερολιμένας) is a picturesque small coastal village and a community in the municipal unit of Oitylo, at the southern end of the Mani Peninsula, in Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece. Τhe name, which means "Old Harbour", is thought to derive from the ancient "Ἱερός Λιμήν" (Hieros Limen), meaning "Sacred Harbour". In this journey you will be passing breath-taking sceneries
